Sucker Punch

I’ve never made it a secret that I dislike Zack Snyder and mostly think of him as a bane on contemporary film making. I did, however, say that I’d give him one last chance with Sucker Punch, which is his only film so far that is not either a remake or an adaptation. Now that the trailer has been out for a while and it’s begun to annoy me enough to want to say something about it, he’s run out of chances with me. The action sequences look engaging and actually far more interestingly shot than the mind numbingly poor work he did on The Watchmen.

Here’s the thing that pisses me off. Even moreso than either of his two most recent efforts, Sucker Punch is clearly telegraphed as being his wet dream. Which I suppose in general is fine, so long as it’s packaged that way, which Sucker Punch isn’t. We’re told that this is a movie about a girl retreating into her subconscious. A subconscious where she is uncomfortably dolled up to be a highly sexualized Lolita and utterly awash in phallic imagery. The trailer itself cuts together an impressive montage of blatantly phallic objects from pumping assault rifles to cork popping champagne bottles with requisite ejaculating bubbly to long shiny swords and finally an imperial metronome to make sure that we understand that the phallus is dictating the pace and is at the core of even the most basic fundamental bits of the world we’re seeing.

This isn’t an adolescent girl’s dream. It’s degrading, objectifying male fantasy grafted onto an adolescent girl. We’re being told that a dark world defined entirely by violent conflict and populated by women whose self images are predicated entirely on male fantasy is the natural subconscious of an adolescent girl. I’m actually reading Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch right now and just finished her most vitriolic description of how women are portrayed in the media right before watching the trailer again and if you wrote up a checklist out of the passage, the Sucker Punch trailer would tick them all. Remember, Greer wrote The Female Eunuch in 1970. Sucker Punch can’t pass muster on a forty year old Feminist polemic. Fuck you and the phallus you rode in on, Snyder.
